Disney World Transportation Complete Guide: Monorail, Skyliner, Buses, Boats & Strategy

Walt Disney World is huge, and how you get around shapes your whole day. If you stay at a Disney hotel, transportation to the parks and Disney Springs is free: buses, the monorail, the Skyliner, and boats. Here's how each one works as of October 2026, plus the current closures you should know about.

The Monorail

There are three monorail lines, and they all run through the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC):

• Resort line: Magic Kingdom, the Contemporary, the Polynesian, the Grand Floridian, and the TTC
• Express line: straight between the TTC and Magic Kingdom
• EPCOT line: between the TTC and EPCOT

If you're staying at the Contemporary, Polynesian, or Grand Floridian, the monorail is your fastest ride to Magic Kingdom. The Contemporary is also a short walk from the Magic Kingdom gate. To reach EPCOT from those resorts, you take the resort monorail to the TTC and switch to the EPCOT line.

The Disney Skyliner

The Skyliner is a gondola system that opened in 2019. It serves:

• EPCOT (at the International Gateway, the back entrance by France and the United Kingdom)
• Hollywood Studios
• Riviera Resort
• Caribbean Beach
• Pop Century
• Art of Animation

Caribbean Beach is the hub. From Pop Century or Art of Animation, you ride to Caribbean Beach and transfer to the EPCOT line (which stops at Riviera) or the Hollywood Studios line. It's a fun, fast ride, and EPCOT to Hollywood Studios by Skyliner is the easiest park hop on property.

The Skyliner pauses for lightning and high winds, which happens a lot on summer afternoons. When it's down, Disney runs buses instead.

Buses

Buses connect every Disney resort to all four theme parks, the water parks, and Disney Springs. They're the only Disney option to Animal Kingdom from most resorts. The My Disney Experience app shows expected bus times. Lines are longest right before park opening and right after park closing, so leave early in the morning and expect a wait after fireworks.

Buses don't generally run directly from one resort to another. If you want dinner at a different resort, it usually means a transfer at a park or Disney Springs, or a rideshare.

Boats

• Ferryboats run between the TTC and Magic Kingdom, across the Seven Seas Lagoon
• Resort launches connect Magic Kingdom with the Grand Floridian and Polynesian, and with Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness
• Friendship boats link EPCOT's International Gateway and Hollywood Studios with the BoardWalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan, and Dolphin (those resorts are also walkable to EPCOT)
• Sassagoula River boats run from the Port Orleans resorts and Saratoga Springs to Disney Springs

Current note: the boat from Old Key West to Disney Springs has been unavailable since July 20, 2026. Old Key West guests should plan on the bus or a rideshare to Disney Springs until Disney says it's back.

Walt Disney World Railroad

The Walt Disney World Railroad inside Magic Kingdom has been fully closed for refurbishment since September 28, 2026, and is expected back around November 2026. When it returns, it runs between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland only, because the Frontierland station stays closed during construction on the new Cars area.

Rideshare and Driving

Uber and Lyft are easy at Disney World and handy for resort-to-resort trips or late nights. For Magic Kingdom, rideshare drop-off is at the TTC, and you finish the trip by monorail or ferry.

If you drive, standard theme park parking is $35 per day, and preferred parking is $50 to $60. Disney hotel guests get free standard parking at the theme parks. Disney resorts charge a nightly fee to park your car at the hotel, which varies by resort.

Park Hopping: the Fastest Routes

• Magic Kingdom to EPCOT: monorail with a transfer at the TTC
• EPCOT to Hollywood Studios: Skyliner, Friendship boat, or walk from the International Gateway (about 20 to 25 minutes)
• Magic Kingdom to Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom: bus
• Animal Kingdom to anywhere: bus

Accessibility

Disney buses have wheelchair lifts or ramps, and the monorail and most boats accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs. The Skyliner can also take wheelchairs and many ECVs. Let the cast member at the station know and they'll help you board.

Getting From the Airport to Disney

Disney's Magical Express, the free airport bus, ended in January 2022, so you need a plan for Orlando International Airport (MCO). The main options:

• Mears Connect: a shared shuttle bus between MCO and the Disney resorts, booked online ahead of time. There's also a pricier Express option with fewer stops.
• Minnie Van airport service: a private ride from MCO, available to guests staying at Disney Deluxe resorts, Disney Vacation Club villas, and Club Level rooms. Book it ahead.
• Uber or Lyft: easy and usually quick, and you pick the timing. Bring a car seat if you have little kids.
• A private car service: good for big families with lots of luggage.
• A rental car: makes sense if you're staying off property or planning trips outside Disney.

Check current pricing for each before you book, because it changes. I go over this with every client once their flights are set.

How Much Time to Allow

Disney transportation is free, but it isn't instant. My rules of thumb:

• Allow about 45 to 60 minutes from your resort to a park by bus, counting the wait.
• Allow more time in the morning for Early Theme Park Entry, when everyone is heading out at once.
• Allow extra time after fireworks, when bus and monorail lines get long.
• For a dinner reservation at another resort, add a transfer, or just take a rideshare.

Transportation by Resort Area

• Monorail resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian): best for Magic Kingdom, and an easy monorail transfer to EPCOT. Buses for Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.
• EPCOT resorts (BoardWalk, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Swan, Dolphin): walk or boat to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. Buses for Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.
• Skyliner resorts (Riviera, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, Art of Animation): Skyliner to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. Buses for Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.
• Magic Kingdom-area boat resorts (Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness): boat to Magic Kingdom, buses elsewhere.
• Bus-only resorts (All-Stars, Coronado Springs, Port Orleans, Old Key West, Saratoga Springs, Animal Kingdom Lodge): buses to all four parks, with boats from Port Orleans and Saratoga Springs to Disney Springs.

A Few Tips That Save Time

• Check bus times in the My Disney Experience app before you leave your room.
• For Magic Kingdom from a monorail resort, the walk from the Contemporary is often faster than waiting for the monorail.
• If the Skyliner line looks long at rope drop, it usually moves fast. The gondolas run continuously.
• On a lightning afternoon, don't count on the Skyliner. Have a bus or rideshare backup.

Transportation Faq

Do I need a car at Disney World? No, not if you're staying at a Disney resort and mostly visiting Disney parks. Plenty of my clients never rent one.

Is Disney transportation free? Yes. There's no charge for the buses, monorail, Skyliner, or boats. The only transportation costs at Disney World are parking, rideshares, and airport transfers.

What's the fastest way from EPCOT to Hollywood Studios? The Skyliner from the International Gateway, or the Friendship boat. If the weather is nice, you can also walk.

How early do buses start running? Buses typically start running before Early Theme Park Entry so resort guests can get there for the early open. Check the app for your resort's first bus.

My Take

If transportation matters a lot to you, pick your resort by its transportation. Monorail resorts are best for Magic Kingdom lovers. Skyliner resorts are best for EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. The EPCOT-area resorts let you walk to two parks. Everything else works fine by bus with a little planning.
