Best Disney World Rides for Thrill Seekers: Every Coaster Ranked by Intensity Level

Disney World isn't a hardcore coaster park, but it has plenty of rides that will get your heart going. Here's my ranking of the biggest thrills at Walt Disney World as of October 2026, from most intense down to "fun but mild," with height requirements and tips.

1. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets

Disney World's most intense coaster. It launches from 0 to about 57 mph in under 3 seconds and goes upside down in the dark. The ride reopened May 26, 2026 with a new Muppets story: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are racing to their biggest concert, with a new queue and preshow. Same launch, same track. From November 4 through January 6, it gets a holiday overlay.

Height: 48 inches. Lightning Lane: Multi Pass (top tier).

2. the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

A haunted hotel elevator with multiple random drops and big airtime. It's not a coaster, but plenty of people find it scarier than Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.

Height: 40 inches. Lightning Lane: Multi Pass.

3. Tron Lightcycle / Run

You ride on a motorcycle-style seat and launch out of the building under a glowing canopy. It's fast and smooth, and the launch is the highlight. Short ride, big fun.

Height: 48 inches. Lightning Lane: Single Pass.

4. Expedition Everest

A mountain coaster with a fast section, a backward run in the dark, and a big drop. The Yeti has been stuck in "disco Yeti" mode (a strobe-lit, non-moving figure) for years, but Disney announced at D23 in August 2026 that it's being fixed. No date has been given yet.

Height: 44 inches. Lightning Lane: Multi Pass.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

The ride vehicles spin to face the action while the coaster runs, including a backward launch. It's one of the smoothest coasters on property and the soundtrack makes it. From November 25, holiday songs join the mix.

Height: 42 inches. Lightning Lane: Single Pass.

6. Mission: Space Orange

A centrifuge simulator with real sustained G-forces. If you get motion sick, choose the Green side, which skips the spinning. Orange is the most physically intense ride at Disney World for a lot of people.

Height: 44 inches for Orange, 40 inches for Green.

7. Space Mountain

The classic indoor coaster in the dark. It's not fast on paper, but the darkness and tight turns make it feel much quicker. The ride is a bit rough, so hold on.

8. Test Track

Test Track reopened in July 2025 with a refreshed story and design inspired by EPCOT's original 1982 look. The high-speed run on the outdoor track is still the big moment.

Height: 40 inches. Lightning Lane: Multi Pass.

9. Slinky Dog Dash

A family coaster with two launches and great views of Toy Story Land. It's mild on intensity but long waits, so rope drop it or book it with Multi Pass.

10. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder reopened May 3, 2026 after a long refurbishment with new track, new trains, and a new Rainbow Caverns scene. The new track makes it smoother, and the height requirement dropped to 38 inches.

11. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

A short family coaster with cars that swing side to side. Mild thrills, gorgeous theming.

Height: 38 inches. Lightning Lane: Single Pass.

Honorable Mentions

• Tiana's Bayou Adventure (Magic Kingdom, 40 inches): a log flume with one big drop. It closes for refurbishment November 2 through December 2026.
• Kali River Rapids (Animal Kingdom, 38 inches): a raft ride where you will get soaked.
• Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (Hollywood Studios, 40 inches): not a coaster, but it has a drop and is the best ride on property in my opinion. Lightning Lane: Single Pass.

A few rides you may remember are gone. Splash Mountain no longer exists at Walt Disney World (Tiana's replaced it). DINOSAUR closed when DinoLand U.S.A. closed on February 2, 2026, to make way for the Tropical Americas area opening in 2027.

Thrill-seeker Touring Tips

• Rope drop the Single Pass rides (TRON, Cosmic Rewind) or buy them, since they aren't in Multi Pass
• Hollywood Studios has the most thrill rides close together: Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror sit right next to each other on Sunset Boulevard
• Single rider lines come and go. Ask a cast member at the entrance
• Ride intense coasters before big meals, not after

How Fast Are They?

Speed isn't everything (Tower of Terror doesn't really have a "top speed" that matters), but here's roughly how the big coasters compare:

• Test Track: about 65 mph on the outdoor loop, the fastest ride at Disney World
• Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind: about 60 mph
• TRON Lightcycle / Run: about 59 mph
• Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets: about 57 mph
• Expedition Everest: about 50 mph

What Your Kids Can Ride by Height

• 38 inches: Big Thunder Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Slinky Dog Dash, Smugglers Run, Kali River Rapids
• 40 inches: everything above, plus Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Tower of Terror, Test Track, Mission: SPACE Green, Rise of the Resistance, Star Tours, and Soarin' Across America
• 42 inches: add Cosmic Rewind
• 44 inches: add Space Mountain, Expedition Everest, Flight of Passage, and Mission: SPACE Orange
• 48 inches: add TRON and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

For kids right on the line, measure before the trip. Cast members check at the entrance and won't round up.

Rider Switch for Mixed Groups

If part of your group can't (or won't) ride, use Rider Switch. Tell the cast member at the entrance. Group one rides while group two waits with the non-rider, then group two rides without waiting in the full line again. It's free and works at all of the big thrill rides.

A Thrill-seeker's Four-park Plan

Magic Kingdom: Early Theme Park Entry for TRON (or buy the Single Pass), then Space Mountain, Big Thunder, and Seven Dwarfs. Tiana's too if you're there before November 2.

EPCOT: Cosmic Rewind first, then Test Track and Mission: SPACE Orange. Save Soarin' for when you need a calmer ride.

Hollywood Studios: Rise of the Resistance or the Muppets coaster first, then stack Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster on Sunset Boulevard.

Animal Kingdom: Flight of Passage at Early Theme Park Entry, then Expedition Everest (twice if the line allows) and Kali River Rapids to cool off.

What's the scariest ride at Disney World? For most people, Tower of Terror or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. For motion-sensitive riders, Mission: SPACE Orange is the one that gets them.

Which coasters go upside down? Only Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets has inversions. The rest stay right side up.

Does Disney World have a ride with a big drop? Tower of Terror has the most intense drops, with several random drops in a row. Tiana's Bayou Adventure ends with one big drop of about 50 feet.

Is Disney World good for real coaster fans? It's more about theming than stats, but Cosmic Rewind, TRON, and the Muppets coaster hold up well against coasters anywhere.
