Animal Kingdom Complete Guide 2026: DinoLand Closure & Tropical Americas Preview

Animal Kingdom Overview

Animal Kingdom is Disney World's largest park, at roughly 580 acres, and 2026 has been a year of change. DinoLand U.S.A. closed for good on February 2, 2026 to make room for Tropical Americas, Bluey's Wild World opened in May, and It's Tough to be a Bug is gone. Here's what the park looks like right now and how I'd tour it.

Dinoland Closure and Tropical Americas

DinoLand U.S.A. closed February 2, 2026, taking DINOSAUR, TriceraTop Spin, Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama, and Restaurantosaurus with it. You'll see construction walls in that corner of the park.

The replacement, Tropical Americas, is scheduled for 2027 (no exact date yet). Disney has announced two rides: Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, and Antonio's Fiesta de Encanto, based on Encanto. That's the full announced ride list, so skip any guide that promises more.

Pandora: the World of Avatar

Avatar Flight of Passage is still the park's must-do. You ride a banshee in a motorcycle-style seat over Pandora, and it's genuinely amazing. It's a Lightning Lane Single Pass ride, so either buy it (roughly $10 to $25) or be there at rope drop. Na'vi River Journey is the gentle boat ride through a glowing rainforest, good for all ages. Visit Pandora after dark at least once to see the land light up.

Food: Satu'li Canteen is one of the best quick-service restaurants at Disney World (try the bowls), and Pongu Pongu sells the Night Blossom drink.

Africa

Kilimanjaro Safaris is an open-vehicle ride through a savanna with real giraffes, elephants, lions, rhinos, and more. Morning and late afternoon tend to have the most active animals. Festival of the Lion King in the Harambe Theater is my favorite show on property. Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is a walk-through path with gorillas and a hippo viewing area.

Tusker House serves a character buffet with Donald and friends, Harambe Market has good quick-service, and Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery handles coffee and pastries.

Asia

Expedition Everest is the park's big coaster, with a backward section in the dark. At D23 in August 2026 Disney announced plans to fix the Yeti animatronic (no date yet). Kali River Rapids reopened December 12, 2025 after its refurbishment, so plan to get wet. Feathered Friends in Flight is a great bird show, and the Maharajah Jungle Trek has tigers.

Yak & Yeti Restaurant serves pan-Asian dishes, and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond! is the musical show nearby (check the app for showtimes).

Discovery Island

The Tree of Life is the park's icon. Walk the trails around it to spot the carved animals. Its theater now shows Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, which replaced It's Tough to be a Bug. Flame Tree Barbecue is the shady quick-service pick here, and Tiffins (with Nomad Lounge next door) is the park's signature restaurant.

Conservation Station and Bluey's Wild World

Take the Wildlife Express Train from Africa to Conservation Station (Rafiki's Planet Watch). Bluey's Wild World opened there May 26, 2026, a Bluey-themed play area and character experience. If you have little kids, it's a top priority. The Affection Section petting area is here too.

Rainforest Cafe

Rainforest Cafe sits at the park entrance and is a Landry's chain restaurant, not a Disney one. It's fine if your kids love the animatronic animals.

Strategy

Animal Kingdom often opens early and closes earlier than the other parks, so check hours. Disney hotel guests get Early Theme Park Entry (30 minutes early, every day); use it for Flight of Passage. Then do Safaris while animals are active, and Everest and Kali in the hot afternoon.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass runs about $15 to $45 per person per day; at Animal Kingdom it's most useful for Na'vi River Journey, Everest, Safaris, and Kali. Disney hotel guests book 7 days before check-in, others 3 days out, at 7 AM Eastern.

Holidays at Animal Kingdom

The holiday season runs November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027. New this year at Animal Kingdom is Santa's Holiday Grove.

Height Requirements at Animal Kingdom

With DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin gone, the height-limited rides are down to three:

• Avatar Flight of Passage: 44 inches
• Expedition Everest: 44 inches
• Kali River Rapids: 38 inches

Everything else, including Kilimanjaro Safaris, Na'vi River Journey, the shows, and the walking trails, works for any height. That makes Animal Kingdom one of the best parks for families with younger kids. Rider Switch is available at the rides with height limits, so one parent can ride while the other waits with a little one, then swap.

A Sample Animal Kingdom Day

Animal Kingdom is the park where an early start pays off the most. Animals are more active in the morning, and the park often closes earlier than the others.

Early Theme Park Entry: Flight of Passage, unless you bought a Single Pass. Then Na'vi River Journey while you're in Pandora.

Mid-morning: Walk to Africa for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Morning safaris usually have the most active animals. Do Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail right after, since it's next door.

Late morning: Festival of the Lion King. Check the showtimes in the app and arrive about 20 minutes early.

Lunch: Satu'li Canteen in Pandora or Harambe Market in Africa. Flame Tree Barbecue if you want a shady seat by the water.

Afternoon: Asia. Expedition Everest (it reaches about 50 mph on the big drop), Kali River Rapids to cool off, Feathered Friends in Flight, and the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Late afternoon: Wildlife Express Train to Conservation Station for Bluey's Wild World if you have little ones.

Evening: Back to Pandora after dark to see the glowing plants, and dinner at Tiffins or Yak & Yeti.

If You Only Have Half a Day

Go in the morning. Do Flight of Passage, Safaris, Everest, and Festival of the Lion King, and you've seen the best of the park. Animal Kingdom is the park I'm most comfortable shortening if a family needs a pool afternoon.

What to Know Before You Go

• Kali River Rapids soaks people. Bring a poncho or a change of clothes, or use the lockers near the ride.
• The paths in Africa and Asia are winding and easy to get turned around in. Keep the map open in the My Disney Experience app.
• There aren't many big indoor queues here, so on hot days plan shows and lunch for midday.
• The Tree of Life trails are easy to skip and worth slowing down for. The carvings are some of my favorite details in all of Disney World.

Animal Kingdom Faq

Is Animal Kingdom a full day park? It can be, but most families are done by mid-afternoon. With construction walls in the old DinoLand area until Tropical Americas opens in 2027, there's a little less to do than there used to be.

What time is best for the safari? First thing in the morning or the last couple of hours before close. Midday heat makes a lot of animals nap in the shade.

Is Flight of Passage worth the Single Pass? If you can't be there at Early Theme Park Entry or rope drop, yes. It's the ride people talk about most after their trip.

Does Animal Kingdom have fireworks? No. The park doesn't do fireworks because of the animals. The evening highlight is Pandora lit up at night.
