runDisney Weekend Planning: What Non-Runners Need to Know (2026 Guide)

runDisney weekends mean 5 a.m. road closures, delayed EPCOT hours, and a resort full of people wearing bibs. Here's what's actually happening on those dates, whether you're running or just trying to get to the parks.

Four weekends a year, Walt Disney World turns part of its road network into a 13.1-mile course before sunrise and fills every resort within a mile of the start line with people carrying gel packets. If you know the dates, runDisney weekends are either something to plan around or something to sign up for. If you don't, you're the guest wondering why EPCOT opened an hour late and why the Boardwalk lobby is full of finisher medals at 8 a.m.

The 2026-2027 Calendar

Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend runs October 22-25, 2026, tied to the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival (which runs through November 21). As of mid-October it's less than two weeks out. Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend follows January 6-10, 2027, the biggest of the four with the full marathon, half, 10K, 5K, and the Dopey Challenge (all four races, four consecutive mornings). Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend runs February 25 through March 1, 2027, skewing toward first-time runners and costume runners more than any other weekend. runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend closes out the season April 15-18, 2027. Disney has moved race dates before, so I confirm them on rundisney.com for my clients before building a trip around them.

Registration for the 2026-2027 season opened months ago, and the popular races (especially Marathon Weekend challenges like Dopey) tend to sell out quickly. If you want to run, check rundisney.com for remaining availability and for when the next season's registration opens.

What It Costs and How Corrals Work

Entry fees run roughly $200-$230 for a half marathon and climb much higher for the Dopey Challenge, which bundles all four Marathon Weekend races into one price. Fees go up most years. For the 5K and 10K you self-report your expected pace at registration and get sorted into a corral off that. For the half and full marathon, a verified proof-of-time from a prior race gets you into an earlier corral; without one, you start further back. Every runDisney race enforces a 16-minute-per-mile pace once the last corral crosses the start line, and pace vehicles or a "balloon lady" trailing the field will pull you off-course if you fall behind that pace, so know that going in if you're planning to run/walk.

Club runDisney is a paid membership that buys earlier registration windows and other perks. It's worth it mainly for people chasing Marathon Weekend or Dopey, where general registration can sell out same-day.

What It Means If You're Not Running

This is the part most guests miss when they book a trip during a race weekend without checking the calendar first. Races start around 5 a.m., and Disney closes the roads runners use for hours before and after. Expect major roads around the race course to be closed from the pre-dawn hours until mid-morning on race days, with Disney posting the exact closures and times on rundisney.com ahead of each weekend. If your resort or your drive to the parks crosses any of those roads, build in extra time on Saturday and Sunday mornings of a race weekend, whether you're headed to rope drop or just to breakfast.

EPCOT itself sometimes opens later than usual on race mornings, with Early Theme Park Entry shifted to match. Check park hours in the My Disney Experience app the week before, and if you had EPCOT circled for rope drop on a race morning, replan around a later opening or pick a different park that day.

Beyond the roads and the hours, expect your resort to feel different. Race weekends fill the resorts near EPCOT (Beach Club, Yacht Club, BoardWalk, Riviera, and Caribbean Beach on the Skyliner) with runners heading to bed early and getting up at 3:30 a.m., which means a quieter pool scene Friday and Saturday night and a lobby full of medals and finisher shirts Saturday and Sunday morning. Quick service lines can run heavier than normal too, since a race weekend adds thousands of extra room nights on top of regular park attendance.

Should You Actually Run One

If you've never run a runDisney race, the 5K or 10K is the easier entry point: shorter training commitment, more forgiving pace requirements, and still gets you the medal and the character photo stops on course (runDisney races are famous for letting you stop for pictures with characters stationed along the route, which is part of why finish times run long compared to a standard road race). The half marathon is a real half marathon with a real pace requirement, not a costume jog, so train for it the way you'd train for any 13.1-mile race. Wine & Dine's timing lines up with the Food and Wine Festival, so a lot of runners treat the race as the excuse and the festival booths as the actual weekend plan.

If you're building a trip around a race weekend, whether you're running or just tagging along, check the exact dates against your park plans before you book anything else. The road closures and adjusted hours are public information from Disney once the calendar is set, and it's a five-minute check that saves you from showing up to a park that opens an hour later than you expected.
