Contemporary Resort Deep-Dive 2026: A DVC Owner's Take on the Monorail-Through-the-Lobby Original

The Contemporary is the third resort on the monorail loop, and the only original 1971 Magic Kingdom resort that does not pretend to be from another place or century. The Polynesian leans South Seas. The Grand Floridian leans Victorian. The Contemporary leans straight into 1970s futurism: a towering A-frame with the monorail gliding right through the middle of it. It is the most polarizing of the three. People who don't like it say it looks like an office building. People who love it say it is the closest you can stay to Magic Kingdom, with some of the best room views on property.

My DVC home resort is the Grand Floridian, but Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary is one of the DVC resorts I recommend most for Magic Kingdom-heavy trips. Here is what I would tell a friend.

The buildings

There are three: the Main Tower (the A-frame), the Garden Wing (low-rise buildings beside the tower), and Bay Lake Tower (the curved DVC building next door).

The Main Tower is the famous one. The monorail runs through the fourth-floor Grand Canyon Concourse, home to Chef Mickey's, Contempo Cafe, and the Outer Rim lounge. The rooms are modern and clean with subtle Incredibles touches. Theme park view rooms look toward Cinderella Castle, and on the right floor you can watch the fireworks from your room.

The Garden Wing is the lower-cost option. No monorail running through it, and a longer walk to the Concourse. Fine for a short stay, but not the same experience.

Bay Lake Tower opened in 2009. It is the Disney Vacation Club building, with studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas, and three-bedroom Grand Villas. Theme park view rooms face Magic Kingdom; lake view rooms face Bay Lake. Theme park view is the category people stretch their points for.

The walk to Magic Kingdom

This is the killer feature. A walkway runs from the Contemporary to the Magic Kingdom entrance in about 10 minutes, the shortest walk to Magic Kingdom from any resort. After fireworks, you walk home while everyone else waits for the monorail or the ferry. That alone justifies the Contemporary for a Magic Kingdom-heavy trip.

The pools

The Feature Pool between the Main Tower and Bay Lake has a twisting water slide, a kids' splash area, and a pool bar. It is busy and not heavily themed, so think functional rather than destination. Bay Lake Tower has its own pool area too, which tends to be quieter.

Dining

California Grill is the headliner: a signature restaurant on the top floor of the Main Tower with a wall of windows facing Magic Kingdom. It is known for sushi, steaks, and seasonal dishes. The best move is booking dinner so you finish before the fireworks; diners can watch Happily Ever After from the observation deck with the music piped in. Book exactly 60 days out at 6 AM ET and keep checking for cancellations.

Steakhouse 71 opened October 1, 2021 for Disney World's 50th anniversary, replacing The Wave. The name nods to the year the resort opened. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is easier to book than California Grill. The lounge is good for a walk-up bite.

Chef Mickey's is the character buffet on the Concourse with Mickey and friends, with the monorail gliding past. Loud, busy, and easy to book. If you have a kid under 8, do it once.

Contempo Cafe is the quick-service spot on the Concourse. Mobile order works.

The Outer Rim is the lounge overlooking Bay Lake, good for a drink before dinner.

Transportation

Walking to Magic Kingdom is the answer most days. The monorail takes you to the Transportation and Ticket Center, where you change to the EPCOT monorail. Buses handle Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and the water parks.

Who should stay here

You are doing a lot of Magic Kingdom and the 10-minute walk home after fireworks matters to you.

You want monorail access without the Grand Floridian's formality or prices.

You like clean, modern design.

You are a DVC owner who can book Bay Lake Tower at 7 months out (or 11 months if it's your home resort).

You want a fireworks dinner. California Grill is the play.

Who should skip it

You are mostly doing EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. A Skyliner resort (Riviera, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, Art of Animation) or an EPCOT-area resort (BoardWalk, Yacht and Beach Club) beats the Contemporary for those parks.

You want an immersive theme. The Contemporary is a sleek hotel with a monorail through it. For strong theming, look at the Polynesian or Wilderness Lodge.

You are price-sensitive in cash. Theme park view rooms in the tower are pricey. The Garden Wing saves money, but you lose the Concourse experience.

A few things the website will not tell you

Theme park view rooms in the tower are worth the upcharge if Magic Kingdom is your trip.

Lake view rooms are cheaper and still pretty, with a calmer view over Bay Lake.

Chef Mickey's is loud. If you have a noise-sensitive kid, ask for a quieter table.

The walk back from Magic Kingdom after fireworks is crowded but moving. The monorail line can look like a wall. Walk.

Final read

Of the three monorail resorts, the Contemporary is the one to pick when location beats theming. You are paying for the walk to Magic Kingdom, the castle views, California Grill, and a clean modern room. If that trade sounds right and the cash rate is lower than the Grand Floridian (it often is), or you can get Bay Lake Tower on points, the Contemporary is the value play of the trio.
